CORE applies for .src: a dedicated domain extension for open source

CORE Association has applied for .src, a new domain extension designed to give open source projects a reliable, secure and recognisable home online.

The announcement comes ahead of ICANN’s Reveal Day on 7 October, when the organisation will publish the applications for new domain extensions and reveal where there are competing applications.

Open source projects need more than a code repository. They also rely on documentation, community discussions, downloads and funding. A .src domain could connect these activities through an address that clearly signals its link to open source.

That address could remain the same even when a project changes repository platforms or hosting providers, helping users and contributors continue to find its code and resources.

CORE’s proposal includes features to support trust while protecting privacy. CORE will work closely with open source organisations and communities to shape the domain space around their needs, while supporting software adoption, funding opportunities and outreach.

If approved through ICANN’s process, .src would provide a dedicated online space built around continuity, trust and collaboration.
