CORE Association has applied for .dpp, a new domain extension designed to give digital product passports clear, reliable and lasting online addresses.
Following ICANN’s Reveal Day on 7 October, we can now confirm that .dpp is not in contention: no competing applications have been submitted for the extension. This takes CORE one step further in the application process, although approval remains subject to ICANN’s evaluation and procedures.
A digital product passport is a digital record containing information about a product, such as its origin, materials, environmental impact and lifecycle. It helps consumers, businesses and authorities make informed decisions and access relevant information, with different levels of access depending on their role.
Digital product passports are also becoming part of a broader move towards more transparent and traceable supply chains. The European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation is a leading framework in this area, but it is not the only initiative worldwide: other product transparency frameworks and international standards are also being developed.
CORE’s proposed .dpp extension aims to support this global development. It would provide dedicated addresses that manufacturers can control and maintain over time, even when their hosting arrangements or passport service providers change.
CORE will work with manufacturers, passport service providers, regulators and other stakeholders to shape a domain space that supports both compliance and useful product information services.
If approved through ICANN’s process, .dpp would offer a dedicated online space for digital product passports and compatible transparency frameworks worldwide.
