Registration of .gov domains is boosting in the U.S., but global adoption is still low

The .gov, aimed at identifying official government services, has always been the least popular among the first TLDs ever created. But things are changing, at least in the U.S. “Dot-gov domains got a significant boost last year when responsibility for administering them shifted from the General Services Administration (GSA) to the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA),” StateScoop explains, noting that the change of registry included waiving the $400 fees that registrants had to pay so far.

While under GSA the growth rate averaged 32 domains a month in 2020-2021, “since CISA took over, the growth rate has nearly tripled, adding 88 new domains per month, or almost 1,100 in the past year.” Still, the adoption rate is slow. Out of a total of 22,637 U.S. local governments (cities and counties) that are able to register a .gov name, only 23% have done so.
