The .tv is the official ccTLD of the Tuvalu Islands, an independent archipelago in the South Pacific. It’s also an obviously meaningful extension with a high commercial value, and the Tuvalu government decided to delegate the marketing rights of the TLD in 1998, allowing anyone in the world to register a domain name ending in .tv.
The TLD was operated for two decades (since 2001) at the Registry level by Verisign, but things changed in March this year, after the Tuvalu government selected GoDaddy Registry as the new registry service provider.
On November 15, 2022, GoDaddy announced “the official relaunch of the .tv”, emphasized by the opening of a new dedicated website, Turnon.tv. The relaunch induces “a complete rebrand and marketing makeover” of the TLD, marking a departure from the logic of mostly targeting major media and professional broadcasters. “We reimagined the brand as a destination for the new generation of Internet users, including content creators from Instagram influencers and TikTokkers, to YouTubers, bloggers, and Twitch streamers”, GoDaddy explains. With this new generational twist, the company hopes for the .tv to become the favorite online home for visual content creators all over the world.
